CHASA SA Record Book · Rekordboek

The measure of a trophy

The official record of the finest trophies taken by members of CHASA's affiliated associations, measured by the South African Measuring Method.

The bilingual record book sets out the history of the South African measuring system, how each species is measured, and the records themselves, species by species. It is part of CHASA's mandate to lay down uniform rules for entering and judging trophies, and to publish them in book form.

Look after your trophy

Great trophies are often ruined by poor handling during or shortly after the hunt. From the record book's guidelines:

  • Skin the animal as soon as possible. Klipspringer, nyala and bushbuck are especially prone to hair slip.
  • Never drag the carcass over stones or gravel; roll it onto a tarpaulin and drag that instead.
  • Keep the carcass cool and out of the sun.
  • Remove all fat and meat from the skin, then wash it and salt it with fresh salt for 48 hours.
  • Dry skins in a cool, shady place, never in the sun, over metal pipes or in plastic bags.
  • Never use formalin products to preserve skins.
